Basketball Drills: Euro Step Fadeaway, and Driving Step Back

Imagine you are driving toward the basket, but a bigger defender is guarding the basket. You are going to need illusiveness to be able to score. In this video I share to unstoppable moves when perfected: the Euro Step Fadeaway, and the Driving Step Back.

The first drill demonstrated in this video is a simple warm up drill for form shooting. Standing about 1 foot away from the center of the basket, with 1 hand make 20 shots.

The warmup demonstrated in this video is 20 free throws. Again focus on having good form so when you get into the drills you are in a good rhythm.

The next part of the drill is when we get into the actual moves. The first move is a eurostep fadeaway. Instead of taking an outward step then stepping towards the goal, we are making our first step inward toward the goal or opponent then stepping out and fading away off of 1 foot. Make sure you are making your initial step toward your defender hard enough that you get enough space to get your shot off, and not have to rush. Do this a minimum of 15 makes on each side of the basket, to as many as needed to master this move. Every undersized guard should have this move in their bag; Chris Paul utilizes this move with excellence.

The next move we will practice in this video is the side step. The side step has a similar motion as the previous move however instead of landing on 1 foot after your initial jab toward the basket, you will land on 2 feet. This move is done a little further away from the basket than the Euro Fadeaway. This is more of a mid range move while the euro fadeaway is done a little closer to the basket: right outside of the paint.

The final move demonstrated in this video is the stepback. Made famous by James Harden, but really was also one of Allen Iverson’s most used moves as well in the previous era. The step back can be used from any part of the court. The main thing to focus on when utilizing a step back is angles. One of the best angles to use the step back, though not demonstrated in this video is coming from the wing. This is very important move for guards especially undersized guards. Allen Iverson and Kyrie Irving create total chaos for the defense by penetrating the lane, getting in front of the basket, and hitting the the D, with a step back around 9-10 feet in front of the goal. The ideal placement is between the free-throw line and the goal. This is a much higher percentage shot than a stepback 3 pointer which was demonstrated in this video.
